Before + After

I have to admit this is a bit scary for me. I've never been one to show my original photos because I felt it was so personal. However, several "likers" on my facebook page expressed that they'd love to see a before + after. So I said aww what the HAY! Well, here it is, folks. My first before + after.

The model is the lovely Hannah @ Ignite Models. She has beautiful skin so I didn't have to do much retouching. For this image it was mostly just exposure and coloring.

My editing process is always different. Sometimes it will just be exposure/color changes... where as some photos require more retouching or photoshopping {ie. adding or removing objects}.
If you'd like to see more posts like this in the future please leave some feedback below. :] I would surely appreciate it.

hello 2012!

It's that time again! 2011 has been a changing year for me and I can't wait to get going on all my plans for 2012!

I have many new things that will be taking place in the first few months of the year, and several sets of photos that will be getting published online. {So keep your eyes peeled}

2011 was a good year for fashion photography. I traveled to Minneapolis frequently and shot with a lot of amazing models. I got to photograph several weddings, seniors, and even a newborn at a the end of the year! {yes, it was my adorable little niece}

I am very pleased to announce that as of 2012 I will be primarily doing wedding photography. I will be known more now as a "wedding & portrait photographer" as opposed to a "fashion & portrait photographer" {ooooh! I know} haha, either way, I am a photographer photographing people and that will never change.

I have booked so many wonderful couples and I can't wait to photograph their weddings! I will still be shooting fashion, seniors and perhaps even a few little newborns when I can. I will always love the variety and the artistic abilities I can bring to each shoot.

I can't wait to get working on all the new things I want to show you.

One of my New Year's Resolution is to blog more, so you'll be hearing a lot more from me. : )

I received an email the other day from a girl who is aspiring to be a fashion photographer. I hope she doesn't mind but I'm going to share with you a few of the questions she asked me and my responses to them [for anyone else who is also aspiring to do photography (in any area)].

1. Your pictures are so beautiful...did you just start off by playing around with the camera and learn, or did you get instruction?

A. I started off just playing around with a camera. I've never taken any classes for photography. I just did a lot of research thanks to the help of Google.
I would look at other photographers who inspired me and try to recognize what it was that I loved so much about their photographs so I could get a better understanding for what I wanted to shoot and how to go about it.

2. Was it hard to learn photoshop to edit your pictures? Do you recommend and websites or books to look at for help with post production processing?

A. I think it was a little hard learning photoshop... I am continually learning, even today, and I feel like only recently have I begun to explore it's full outlets and what I can do with it.
I would recommend looking at Lindsay Adler's blog. http://blog.lindsayadlerphotography.com/category/photoshop/
She has a few retouching tutorials as to how she's done things... She always gives good advice.

I would also look at http://www.kelbytraining.com I've only subscribed for one month (about a year ago), but they have a lot of really great tutorials with some of the best photographers in the world. [Maybe I'll subscribe again and see what new things they've got. :) ]

Aside from that I really just learned through trial and error. I'm going to be selling curves soon (stay tuned), which is the probably my favorite thing I have learned in photoshop to date.

Whenever I have questions, Google is always my best friend.

3. How did you start getting TFP/TFCD models? I am nervous to do this! I've only shot my friends so far.

A. I contacted the agency I'm still working with and I just introduced myself, gave them my website, said I was interested in working with their models, and if they had any new faces they'd be interested in me shooting.
Fortunately, the agency I work with all the time is very relaxed, unlike some of the others in the industry. I remember how nervous I was when I first got an email back from them! All you can do is try. :)

4. Is there any advice you wish you had been given when you started out in photography?

A. I wish someone would have told me how hard I was going to be on myself and to never compare yourself to others. Especially since I didn't start until I was 19 and all the photographers that I was finding and first discovering were all like 16-17 (still in high-school). I felt soooo behind, and it made me really not want to grow up. I realized though that we all discover our passions at different times and comparing ourselves to others will only make us just like everyone else and that isn't what art is about at all. It's about being true to yourself and creating what you aspire.

5. What are some of the best ways to get more jobs?

A. TALK! The best way I have found to get more jobs is to simply talk more about it. A lot of my work I've gotten because of my Facebook fan page and my activity tripled just by posting a photo every day. I unfortunately haven't been able to keep up with it due to my busy schedule, but if people know there's going to be something new to look at everyday, then they are going to go there to look. Also, word of mouth has gotten me a lot of jobs. So just by getting the word out that you're offering "it" whatever "it" might be will always be to your advantage. A little advertising, bringing a business card around to different business that you believe target your audience will help.

I personally want to thank each and every one of you for your continued support and lovely comments. It means the world to me and I cannot tell you how much it encourages me to continue trying. It is so easy to get upset with yourself, especially as an artist, you are never satisfied with yourself or your work. So thank you, truly.

Camera Handbag

When I went to NYC, a few months ago, I was looking for a camera bag that I could wear around that would protect my camera, but also be big enough to keep my wallet in. I ended up just wrapping my camera in a towel and carrying it around in my purse because I couldn’t find anything…

Well, I decided last week to make one! I just used a bag I had already owned, some fabric, a little sewing machine, a needle, thread, different measurements of foam, and velcro!

Depending on the amount of interest and feedback I receive on the one I made for myself, I’m thinking about making lots of different sizes/colors and selling them!

New Member to the Lens Family!

Today, my new recent lens purchase arrived. I purchased the Canon 28mm 1.8 lens. I've been wanting a wide angle lens for quite some time now. After going back and forth trying to decide what would be the best purchase for me (at this time) I decided on the Canon 28mm. After testing it out today, I'm very happy I did. A lot of reviews mentioned that it was "soft" at 1.8, but after testing it out all day today (taking tons of pictures of my boyfriend and cats :] ) I can say I didn't find anything soft about the focus at 1.8. It was spot on just as my 50 and 85 are...

I took pictures sitting in the same spot so you can get an idea of how the lenses look in comparison.
Note: I shot all of these on my full frame camera.

I had a wonderful trip to New York and New Jersey. It was a great experience and I can't wait to go back. Next time, though, I plan to be doing lots of shoots while I'm there.

It's normal for us as we're growing up to try different things, to dress different ways, all in search of figuring out who we are. Finding photography was just that for me. It was about figuring out who I was all along. It just took me getting my little "Aha!" moment to realize it.

I was your average kid... I'd say. I did well in high school so I could get it done and over with so when I graduated I would be able to move out of the small town I was from and make the life for myself that I wanted. I went off to college in hopes that I would graduate with a psychology degree and go on to graduate school.

Well...

On Dec. 28th it'll be exactly a year since I decided to quit college and do photography on my own.

It took a lot of explaining, especially to my family, but I believe it was the right decision for me to leave. I had the option of staying in school and just switching my major to photography, but I felt like I would just be wasting more money than I would be getting out of it. Having to pay for school myself it was becoming quite an expense among my already housing and living costs. I was struggling to pay for everything with just a part time job, and I was spending more time learning photography at home than I was paying attention in my general classes. I will always be grateful for my first year of school. It was there that I realized photography could be more than just something I loved growing up, but it could actually be what I do with my life. I didn't think that was possible.

Going to school for photography is always a tough question, but I think it's a personal decision and a personal decision only. So by no means do I think school for photography is a bad thing. It's just something that fits people differently, that's all. It also greatly varies for each person. I am a very self-motivated person and I can research something for weeks if I care about it enough. But I believe those who learn better from others, school is their best option.

With 2010 coming to a close I'd like to reflect on just how far I've grown and changed as a photographer in the last year.

Here are few pictures that I took over the course of the year:

Jan. 2010 - This is a self-portrait I took while I was practicing different ideas I had with a window drape:

Jan. 2010 - This is Taylor - she was the first stranger I had ever shot with who wanted to model for me.

Feb, 2010 - Practicing by taking self-portraits weekly.

March, 2010 - A conceptual shoot with a friend, Rachel. Starting to play around with natural lighting and shadows.

April 5, 2010 - I made the dress pictured below for my first fashion location shoot with model, Jenn.

April 19, 2010 - An updated self portrait.

May, 2010 - Another shoot with Jenn. Shot at my dad's farm. I had my friend, Diana help me with hair and the body paint.

June, 2010 - This is Tasha. We met online after seeing her work with other photographers in the area. Practicing still with fashion, lighting, and shadows.

July, 2010 - This is Rikki from Ignite - she was the first agency model I had ever worked with.

August, 2010 - I spent all of August doing commissioned work. Here is one of the pics from the 2nd wedding I shot.

Sept., 2010 - This is Lily from Ignite - this is the first time I had ever worked with a Hair & MUA.

Oct., 2010 - I met up with Rikki again to practice using my lighting and to take some simple portraits.

Nov. 2010 - This is Caroline from Ignite Models, this is the first time I had a whole team (a hair & MUA, a stylist, and assistants) working on a shoot together.

Dec. 2010 - Lastly, a a final self portrait for 2010. It's been a good year.

I have high hopes for 2011 as I am celebrating the new year in New York City.
2011 can only get better.

New Year's Resolutions

I was inspired by Samantha Nandez and Emily Tebbetts to go back and look at my 2010's New Year's Resolutions and I realized I definitely did not aim high enough. So this year - I am expecting much more out of myself and going to give myself more of a challenge.

2010's Resolutions
- live happily: I'd say I did a pretty good job doing this. But, it can always use improvement. Next year, less stress about money.

-make an effort with friends: I'd say I've gotten much better at this than I had been in 2009. However, I still need work in this area so I will continue to work on this in 2011.

-buy 50mm lens: I bought this right away in January. I remember thinking how expensive a $300 lens was. HA. Recently I just bought the 85mm 1.2 ...how I have changed my mind. lol

-buy the Canon 5d mark II: I was able to purchase my new camera back in April/May.

-save $1000.00: I was able to do this finally by summer and I had done a pretty good job holding on to it until just recently (w/ buying the 85mm 1.2)

-save up for lighting: I purchased a small lighting kit in Feb. (I think?) but this is something I'm going to continue to try to grow and use more often than I have been recently.

2011's Resolutions
1. Shoot more. much much more. My goal is at least once a week. This will probably be the hardest for me. Not because I don't want to shoot obviously, but because I hate doing self-portraits, it will be hard getting different people to shoot with every week, and I criticize myself so much on my own work.
2. Travel. Well I'm on a good route to this one. I'll be traveling to NYC/NJ for New Years. Also, I'm hoping to travel to Holland and England again next summer.
3. Move to a new city/state.
4. Continue to use my film camera more often.
5. See my images in a magazine in print!
6. Buy a new lens. or two. :)
7. Start shooting video.
8. Experiment more with studio setups & lighting.
9. Live Happily - (without worrying about money so much)
10. Go out more - I tend to be such a hermit (especially with my computer) this year I'd like to go out more and meet up with friends more often (& make more amazing friendships) :]

I'm sure I will think of more things to add to this. If I do, I promise to update it.

bahah. I just had to say that.

Any who. =) I'm going to start experimenting with film. I've found myself getting so caught up in my "serious" personal photography. Making sure everything is perfect. Which, granted, is very important. lol. But, I've forgotten to play as well. I've forgotten that its ok to take pictures of flowers, or random things that you see like you did when you were just starting out. So that's what films going to be, for me. playtime. :)

I am beginning another new journey. (other than my already embarked photographic journey, lol)

In efforts of fulfilling my dream of becoming a fashion photographer, I am learning how to sew. I have found that I am a very picky lady when it comes to picking out the clothing for a shoot, and well, frankly, I can't afford the clothes that I love. The clothes that I would love to use for a fashion shoot, I just simply cannot afford, and at this point in my life I don't have a designer or a stylist in my area who can help me find clothes that I love. Once I move I know that will change. But, for now, in my efforts of originality and keeping my sanity (sort of) lol, I'm learning to sew. Maybe, in this effort, I will learn to appreciate fashion even more than I already do. To realize the effort a designer goes through to be original and to make such wonderfully crafted pieces.

Since I will be sewing most of the clothing I'm going to be using for shoots, I will also now be able to have more control over the story I want to portray, and I will have more outfits to create a story line.

I am very excited, but very nervous. I know it will be challenging, and I know there will be times when I will want to give up or just go buy something rather than make it because it's easier. But, I will try, and I will continue to post here after a new story is completed. I hope you will follow me on my journey. : )

new shutter release review!

Hello! I'm sorry I've been so absent and horrible about blogging. I am giving myself a new goal, as part of my 52week project, I have to blog AT LEAST once a week (if not more). I am going to be much busier with the days getting longer and the weather getting nicer and so I will have more to write about. lol.

I just got my new shutter release in the mail today and I wanted to do a little review on it for those who have been comtemplating buying one. I bought mine off of ebay, for $16.00 from an ebay store located in China. I checked on what the batteries were before purchasing, just because they usually give you crap ones to begin with so I wanted to make sure I could easily buy them around my area.

I tested it out today and so far so good! I love it! The batteries work well so far, and I had absolutely no problem hooking it up to my camera.

I haven't gone very far distances with it (yet). :) But, I plan to, and the auto focus works really well, which is soooo nice to have. lol

Here is my niece attempting to work it. lol. She couldn't quite figure out how to half-way hold it to focus so I apologize for the out-of-focusness.

Here are a few pictures of the exact shutter release I bought and what it looks like.

When I was looking on ebay there were quite a few different stores selling different versions of the same remote I bought. I figured they were all the same, just different names. So hopefully should you decide to purchase one too you won't have problems finding one. :) Btw: I shoot with Canon, but the remote is meant to work on Nikon as well.

I had a big shoot on Tuesday, April 6th. For this shoot, it was quite exciting because I had made the dress. (Plus, it was my first location shoot with my new lighting) :)

It was a great day and I had an awesome team to work with. I was also able to get my lovely roommate, Diana to take 'Behind the Scenes' pictures. *Next time, we are going to try video :) *

I want to say thank you to Nirrimi. She is only 17 and is such an amazing photographer. This time, it wasn't just her photos that moved me. It was her eloquent flow of words that brought tears to my eyes. She was able to say what I could only ever feel. I could relate so well to everything she wrote, but this paragraph really hit home for me, as I'm sure it could anyone who is living life chasing their dream.

"i've learnt that to make dreams come true, you have to be obsessed. truly, utterly obsessed. i think of obsession as passion squared, and if you have passion for something people will see that. if you go through an entire day without doing something towards your dream, you're not obsessed enough to make it happen."

Photography is just that for me. It is my obsession. My passion. The thing I cannot go on one day with out. It's what drives me. I really can not imagine what I'd be without it....

There is so much I want to do.
I want to inspire...
I want teach & help others with photography.
I want to be someone to look up to.
I want to be a friend from far away.
I want to love and be loved.
I want to dream and dream big.
I want to live.

March is going to be such an amazing/busy month for me!

I'll be in Arizona for a week. I'm leaving on the 13th. I am SOO excited! I'll be seeing some family friends that I haven't seen since I was 9. It'll be a great time. Lots of photos will be taken. :)

I'll also be making a large purchase this month on lighting. I'm really excited to start experimenting and start doing beauty shoots. :)

I have 2 large portfolio test shoots planned (so far) for this month. Both of which I've been planning for months. I AM SO EXCITED! I hope everything works out the way I have them pictured in my head. But, either way, it'll be good experience for me.

In the mean time, I will continue doing my 52 week project.

Speaking of which... here is my week 9. :)

I had a busy day today. It felt good to get so many things done and be productive. :)

One of them being my week 8 pictures. I didn't really know what I wanted to do for this week. So, I played around a bit. :)

Hello everyone! As you can see, I updated my website, again! I just couldn't stand not being able to have a blog included with my website and my pictures panning all over the place. haha.

So, I re-designed. Please bare with me, this is a very rough version. I just needed a way for my images to be viewed more clearly and a better blog. I will hopefully be adding more graphics and spicing up the website design. If you have any suggestions please feel free to let me know. ALSO, if something isn't working. Tell me! I would like to know so I can fix it.
